Not a Love Story offered insights and perspectives from men and women who earn their living in the sex industry, alongside some of pornography's most outspoken critics who reflected the wave of feminist anti-pornography sentiment at that time. Strident anti-porn statements are accompanied by live sex shows, carefully chosen for maximum impact.

The film follows its three heroes from their childhood in the seventies through their teenage rebellion in the eighties, ending in the last summer of their life in the German Democratic Republic in 1989, when their life changed forever, and follows them to 2011.
