本片改编自著名作家苏童的短篇小说《小偷》。 　　曾经有人感叹过：有谁真正哀痛过孩子的灵魂吗？苏童的《小偷》应该是做到了。因为他以笔作刀，一刀便切开了孩子的灵魂，使我们清晰地看到了人类原初状态的善与恶、美与丑，并以此给予孩子心灵极大的尊重和关爱。难能可贵。因此我个人认为，影片《小火车》的戏剧核心是“出卖”——孩子对友谊的“出卖”。

At the same time (presumably during the same trip), the Warwick Trading Company produced a similar 'phantom ride' through nearby Ilfracombe.
