以现代日本为背景，描绘忍者与极道之间激烈对抗的动作漫画。1657 年，在明历大火的背后，由幕后江户守护者神赛惨蔵与始祖极道、江户第一任侠幡随院长兵卫的死斗引发的忍者与极道的宿怨，至今仍在延续。极道，既是那些被社会孤立之人的唯一归宿，同时也因犯下诸多恶行而屡遭企图消灭极道的忍者袭击。 　　竹本组的“幕后组长”兼“破坏之八极道”成员之一辉村极道，为了彻底消灭忍者，使用了一种能异常强化身体能力的毒品——“地狱回数券”，并在东京各处制造引人注目的骚乱，以此引诱察觉恶行而来的忍者。在这场骚乱中，一个不受法律与权力束缚、致力于阻止极道恶行的忍者团体“帝都八忍”中的一员被杀，包括“多仲忍者”在内的同伴们燃起了对极道的复仇之火。 　　另一方面，表面上过着高中生生活的少年“忍者（忍叶）”和表面上作为精英上班族生活的青年“极道（极美）”，因女童向动画《公主系列》的话题而意气相投，在彼此不知对方真实身份是“忍者与极道”的情况下建立了友谊。

長距離トラックの運転手は人生の大半をトラックの中で過ごすようなものである。この道30年、長距離トラックの仕事に明け暮れてきた田島精治は、疲れきって久々に家に帰った。だが、浦安の団地も精治にとって心なごむものではなかった。生活に疲れた妻、芳子の棘々しさ、去年高校を出た芸能タレント志望の長女、絵里との心の距離など。精治は相棒の篠塚稔と組んでもう長い。稔はギャンブルに狂い、妻の秀子にも愛想をつかされ独り暮らしをしていた。国道181号線、米子の手前20キロの所に24時間営業のドライブイン、さくらがある。マスターの佐倉直吉は昔、精治と組んでトラックを運転していたのだが、20年前の事故で片脚を失って以来、転業していた。さくらに久しぶりに寄った精治は、若いウェイトレスの小宮和江と出会う。翌日、店を辞めて母親のいる萩に帰るという和江を精治はトラックに乗せた。そして年下の男と再婚した母親に受け入れられず、行き場を失った彼女を精治はさくらに連れ戻す。途中、二人は運転台の中でどちらからともなく抱き合った。それからというもの、精治は和江に逢いたい一心で堺港行きの荷を選んだ。ある日、東京に帰った稔は秀子に復縁を乞うたが断られる。米子方面の荷物が途だえ精治がさくらから遠ざかる日々が続いた。長距離電話も喧嘩に似たやりとりになり、和江は愛する人に逢えない辛さに泣いた。そんな彼女に直吉がプロポーズをした。さくらにいづらくなった和江は上京し、歌舞伎町のラブホテルで住み込みとして働いた。精治は芳子に離婚を切りだそうとするが、中々言いだせない。芳子も夫に女の匂いを嗅ぎ怯えていたのだ。精治はかねてから稔に、より多い収入を賭けて一緒に自営を始めようと持ちかけていたが、稔がやっと承諾してくれた。だが、稔は精治の目の前で交通事故死してしまう。精治は結局、妻を捨てきれず和江と別れた。精治の子を宿した和江はさくらを訪ねた。絵里のヌード写真の載った雑誌を偶然見つけた精治は、絵里を叱りとばす。興奮した絵里は芳子の前で、直吉が精治に宛てた手紙を読みあげた。手紙には和江の妊娠が記されていた。精治はトラックをさくらに走らせ、和江を乗せて新しい仕事先へ向かう。雨の中、苦しげに喘ぐ和江は夥しく出血していた。必死で救急車を呼ぶ精治。だが、救急車が来ないうちに和江は息をひきとった。
