这部影片取材于托尔斯泰的短篇小说，借一张500元大额伪钞在不同的人之间流传，反映出人生的种种悲剧。最初是诺伯特将这张钞票付给伊冯，伊冯再次拿它付帐时，却被指控为参与一起抢劫案的司机，于是锒铛入狱。获释后，伊冯杀死了下榻旅馆的老板，还杀死了收留他的一家人。
