In the 65-minute film This is our house!, Actors of the apartment building syndicate explain the model of collective appropriation of the space and present diverse projects in different spatial contexts. The viewers are motivated to start their own projects in the stable solidarity of the apartment building syndicate. This early student short, made by Tsangari in Texas, begins just as Attenberg would years later – with a strange kiss. The kiss fills the entire frame: a woman’s tongue extracts tiny silver beads from a man’s mouth. Is it a dream? A dream within a dream? Or a world stranger than either? In this surreal landscape – part Alice in Wonderland, part educational film spoof – clothing, furniture, and space distort unpredictably. A disembodied narrator offers commentary with bureaucratic calm. Lizzie Curry Martínez stars in the lead role; she would later become Tsangari’s long-time collaborator on The Slow Business of Going. Behind the camera is Matthew Johnson, who would go on to edit many of her future films.
