玛利克几经寻找，终无下落。后来他根据自己的记忆用木头雕一头像，并送给科主任杨华看，杨华马上认出此人是医学院应届毕业生王玉萍，并告诉玛利克该同学很快就要来本院实习。后来，在实习过程中，他们由相识、相知、到相恋。王玉萍几经周折，冲破来自社会、家庭的阻力，终于登上西去的飞机。然而，此时玛利克由于抗婚，已被爷爷那塔软禁。当王玉萍踏上西非大地，走出机场时却不见心上人来迎接。 玛利克在芳达的帮助下已逃出爷爷软禁。芳达是玛利克出国留学前的恋人，后已分手，但芳达一直深深地爱着他。玛利克由于寻找王玉萍一时急躁，与警察吵架并动手打人而被拘留，后经芳达从中斡旋才得获释。 王玉萍将登上返回祖国的飞机，突然从机场的播音器中传来玛利克的声音：“小萍，我是玛利克，你不要走，我爱你——”王玉萍怀着深深的疑惑，与玛利克见面了。 为了生存，玛利克只好在芳达的诊所医生，以此维持生计。但玛利克并没有满足芳达爱的要求，这一点使芳达非常苦恼。在一次冲突中，芳达当着王玉萍的面，道出她与玛利克的过去，这使王玉萍非常震惊，她陷入极度痛苦之中，一气之下离家出走，先到医疗队杨华处暂住，并打算回国，玛利克的弟弟塞古是个可爱的孩子，在与王玉萍相处中，他们之间已建立起深厚的友谊。他目睹了家中发生的一切，他理解哥哥，同时又非常同情王玉萍，于是他背着家人独自来到医疗队驻地，在月光下唱起王玉萍教他的中国歌曲《黄土高坡》……王玉萍回来了，玛利克向她说明了他与芳达过去的一切，王玉萍谅解了他。玛利克为摆脱芳达的追求和经济上的控制，决定去另一家医院巴克诊所就职，芳达恼羞成怒，一气之下将诊所烧了，芳达被害烧伤住院，王玉萍知道后被芳达这种为了爱不惜牺牲一切的精神感动了，建议玛利克到医院去护理芳达，并亲自到医院探望，王玉萍的行为也深深感动了芳达。 一天，王玉萍去巴克诊所看望玛利克，恰巧遇上一个胃痉挛的患者痛苦不堪，在大家束手无策的时候，王玉萍为患者进行针灸治疗，患者很快恢复正常。巴克被王玉萍的医术片服，在巴克的盛情邀请下，很快王玉萍也来巴克诊所就职，她用中医中药以及针灸术治疗了许多疑难的病患，有时甚至冒着生命危险到贫困地区去抢救病人。很快她被西非人民誉为“上帝的女儿”。各种新闻媒体介绍她、宣传她，王玉萍成了当地的名人。 玛利克的爷爷那塔此时也进退维谷，他也被王玉萍高尚的品格所打动，但家族中的人们对那塔的固执也是敢怒不敢言。 后来，王玉萍用中药、针灸为一位失明多年的老奶奶治疗，在她精心呵护下，终于使老奶奶复明，岂料她正是那塔当年的情人，当年由于部族门弟的原因，这对相爱的年青人没有走到一起。当老奶奶得知王玉萍不被那塔承认，并不允许与至利克举行婚礼后，她毅然带着王玉萍去庄园面见那塔，那塔终于承认这个来自中国的孙媳妇，并为他们举行了隆重的婚礼。
