在北京上小学的小飞，随外公钟教授到南方疗养。在那里，他结识了湖西小学航模小组的小岷、大满等小朋友，并参加了他们的航模活动。小飞虽然聪明，但有娇、骄二气，他不重视基础知识的学习，也不愿付出艰苦的劳动，结果在现场操作时遭到失败。后来在老科学家钟教授和当地老农鲍爷爷等人的引导下，他懂得了必须学好基础知识，才能使模型飞机飞上天去的道理。在制作过程中，为了使别人的小飞机先飞起来，小飞等自觉让出了自己的好零件。结果大家的航模飞机都做成功了，当这些小飞机比翼高飞在天空时，小朋友们兴高采烈，他们也象这些小飞机一样向着美好的未来展翅飞翔。电影拍摄主要地点在江苏省无锡市师范附属小学内．
