少々血の気は多いが、平凡な高校生活を送っていた少年、兜甲児が自宅に帰ってみると、ただ一人の肉親である兜十蔵が何物かに襲われ、殺されていた。 　　「神になるのも悪魔になるのもおまえ次第だ」との言葉と共に祖父の兜十蔵から受け継いだのは、なんと地上最強の巨大超合金ロボット・マジンガーZだった。 　　祖父の命を奪ったのは、バードス島の古代超科学で世界制覇を企むDr.ヘルであり、その部下であるアシュラ男爵のあしゅら軍団だった。 　　打倒マジンガーZを目指して、強力な機械獣を繰出してくる。 　　兜博士の弟子である弓教授の光子力研究所に身を寄せることになった甲児は、教授の一人娘・弓さやかの操縦するアフロダイAと共に、地球の平和を守るためにDr.ヘルの機械獣軍団と戦い続ける。
