故事發生在美國紐約，小菅耕介(西村雅彥飾演)是日本電影公司派駐紐約的特派員，生性靦腆、善良。通口紀人(石橋貴明飾演)是個自由業者，從事攝影工作，善於交際、誹聞不斷。女主角川上真琴(飯島直子飾演)則個性大而化之，因逃避感情問題而前來紐約，不料又重蹈覆轍愛上有婦之夫，因此鬱鬱寡歡。小菅對住在樓上的真琴有意，想盡辦法找她攀談，製造話題並將自己的電話號碼給了她，然而真琴對於小菅的殷勤只是應付了事。某日通口找上小菅要求他前往舊女友住處拿回自己的行李，小菅擔心真琴會打電話來，極力推託，卻抵不過通口死纏濫打，終於前去，不料此時真琴卻打電話過來… 原來真琴即將出外旅行，希望小菅代為照顧她飼養的貓。然而通口認為種種跡象顯示事情另有蹊蹺，偕同小菅破門而入，竟發現真琴企圖自殺…

委内瑞拉著名电影人Román Chalbaud的《El Pez que fuma》被国家电影协会评为委内瑞拉影史10部最佳影片的第二位。 　　A handsome young man is released from jail and goes to "El Pez que Fuma", a bordello in the outskirts of Caracas. La Garza, its middle-aged owner, hires the young man as handy man, but soon he takes the place of the administrator, who is also La Garza's lover. 　　One of the ten best Venezuelan movies of all the time. This is the best Venezuelan film of all times and one of the best Latin American movies ever, it explains the social and moral reality of a bunch of people trying to survive in this political corrupted south American country in the 70's decade."El Pez Que Fuma" has an awesome story so it keeps the audience focused on the movie from start to end. The characters are just great since they are played for excellent actors ( Miguel Landa, Orlando Urdaneta), who after the popularity of the movie became a big great reference of the Venezuelan Film history. I definitely think this is the best work that a Venezuelan film maker could have ever done.
