广岛原子弹爆炸的时候，矢须子正坐船去看叔叔重松，在濑户内海上淋着了“黑雨”。后来重松夫妇带着矢须子，还有重松的母亲阿金一起回故乡——福山市的小岛居住。村里的人都不同程度地受到了原子弹的伤害。重松把祖先的土地卖掉，跟儿时的好友一起搞鲤鱼养殖。因为据说吃鲤鱼对治疗原子弹后遗症很有效。村里人各有各的烦恼。冈崎家带着一个一听到公共汽车引擎声就发狂的儿子悠一经营小杂货店。池本家放儿女去当酒吧侍者，自己偷偷的干黑活。而重松苦恼的不是自己的身体状况，而是矢须子的婚姻问题，提亲的人听说她见过“闪光”都缩了回去。重松为了解除大家的疑虑，重抄了矢须子的日记，想证明她只是淋了黑雨，而没有直接见到“闪光”——原子弹爆炸。不久，重松的好友相继死去，妻子也得了神经分裂症。而矢须子只好把心灵寄托在那个没听到引擎声时象石雕一样一动不动的悠一身上，但是，不久她也开始掉头发了。

The manga, which this seems to only be loosely based off, was serialised in 'Manga Panchi' and other Adult-Male-near-Pornographic magazines. Nakazawa only got the chance to tell a censored version of his own story when he met a co-operative editor at Weekly Shonen Jump [Shueisha] in 1971. He got to publish a one shot called Ore wa Mita, before his concept of Hadashi no Gen was greenlighted. When the editor was promoted, his work was not so accepted, and he would spend the rest of serialisation of Hadashi no Gen being flitted around publishers/magazines, including Union and Educational magazines.
