In this four and a half hour documentary or filmic tavelogue, Ulrike Ottinger tries to impart new ways of seeing a foreign culture. "In my previous films I have dealt with the themes of exoticism, minorities and their differing role behaviour within their own culture. Now I am interested in expanding this theme, in getting to know a 'real exoticism' in a foreign land and in a different culture. I am attempting to conduct a visual discourse with my camera about exoticism as a question of point-of-view. 　　In making the film, I was influenced by Chinese naturepainting: by the use of the scroll, which not only demands a different method of painting, but a different way of viewing - rolling out the scroll, focusing in on details, wandering to and fro, viewing piecemeal. So if I was filming a market square, for example, I'd pan very slowly and steadily across the square, rather than trying to capture the image in toto. 　　– Ulrike Ottinger

这是我在甘肃古浪黄羊川拍摄的"甘肃的意大利"系列的第三部，纪录的主要是我在当地认识的朋友和熟人们的生活，他们主要是镇上中学的老师，还有一些原来在这个学校工作，后来调入县里，总之，都是一些有公干的人，有稳定的收入。从2000年和他们认识到现在，已经有10年的时间。我的拍摄是在2005年7月到2008年10月之间，最终的片子呈现为4个部分，每个部分基本对应于一个独立时期，里面的大环境和个人的境遇都在逐渐改变。 　　This is the 3rd documentary film in my series of films, Italy, Gansu Province，which was shot in Huangyangchuan Township, mainly documented the lives of my local friends and acquaintances there. Most of them are local high school teachers, or ex-teachers later transfered their jobs to the county. In all, not like local farmers, they have steady jobs and steady incomes. 　　We got to be friends in 2000. My shooting lasted from Jul. 2005 to Oct. 2008, this film is constructed in four parts, each part correspond an certain period of time, with a different circumstance and personal condition.

1945年8月，抗日战争刚结束，国内局势紧张，全面内战一触即发。蒋介石表面上邀请毛泽东（王斑 饰）前往重庆进行和平谈判，实则心怀鬼胎。他一边密切关注毛泽东的动向，一边指使戴笠（孙磊岩 饰）在国统区大肆迫害共产党人，和平前景蒙上一层阴影。 抗战烈士定远将军之子赵云飞（秦俊杰 饰）加入国民党军统无线电监听科，负责审查共产党的宣传资料。在仔细研读这些宣传品的过程中，他逐渐被共产党的真理和隐蔽战线同志的高尚情操所打动，内心的信仰开始发生转变。与此同时，国统区的腐败堕落、残酷统治也让赵云飞意识到，只有选择更崇高的信仰，才能找到真正的救国之路。 在这个动荡的时代，赵云飞面临着艰难的选择，而时代也在召唤着他做出正确的决定。

1945年8月，抗日战争刚刚落下帷幕，而国民内战剑拔弩张，一触即发。蒋介石假意邀请毛泽东（王斑 饰）赴湘重庆谈判，他一面多方打听毛泽东的动向，一面又命令戴笠（孙磊岩 饰）大肆捕杀国统区的共产党人，和平的上空阴云密布。抗日战争期间牺牲的定远将军的独子赵云飞（秦俊杰 饰）来到国民党军统无线电监听科报到，之后被安排审查共党的红色宣传品。在大量审读宣传品的过程中，他渐渐为真理和中国共产党隐蔽战线同志的高尚坚毅品格所感召，内心信仰发生动摇。与此同时，国统区的乌烟瘴气、腐朽不堪以及残酷恐怖都促使赵云飞选择更为崇高的信仰。
