2004 年印度洋大地震发生於2004年12月26日UTC时间00:58:55 ( 雅加达，曼谷当地时间07:58:55）。震央位於印尼苏门答腊以北的海底。当地地震局测量到的强度为6.8级，香港、中国大陆及美国量度到的强度则为里氏(芮氏, 黎克特制) 8.5至8.7。其后香港天文台和美国全国地震情报中心分别修正强度为8.9和9.0。这是自1964年阿拉斯加耶稣受难日地震来最强的地震，也是 1900年以来强度第四的地震。有数万人在地震引发的海啸中死亡，一些地区的海啸高达十多米（33英尺）。

这部剧写的是1942年，在抗日战争最艰苦的一年，胶东地区遇到了海啸灾难，颗粒无收，根据地老百姓面临断粮危险。以宫明山为首的八路军运粮小分队，包括文书郭玉文，战士大老姜，通讯员小马等人接受了为根据地送粮的任务。一路上他们遇到了难以想象的困难，经历了土匪的骚扰，日寇的截击，国军的偷袭，小分队的战士几乎全部牺牲，最后终于将粮食安全地运达目的地。
