故事描述流浪汉冯大刚（蔡弘）路过劫案现场，土匪龙文轩为灭罪证欲将之击毙；冯被保安队发现更以为他曾参与行劫，将他关进死囚牢里。龙恐冯成后患，企图收卖狱中的扒手杨灵（姜大卫）向流浪汉下毒手。杨为正义之士，知冯同是黑狱蒙冤，故设法逃狱；谁料此次的逃狱竟使二人成真正的死囚……

Meanwhile, Werner Herzog’s off-screen voice pronounces that he is an opponent of the death sentence. Herzog’s gently formulated line in questioning succeeds in eliciting responses from his interviewees that are no less sensitive yet strangely matter-of-fact and seem to surface like disclosures from the depths of the human soul.
