某市知名时尚杂志《face》（脸）面临着重大人事改革，所有职位都将实行竞争上岗和年薪制。消息传出后，整个杂志社人人自危、个个忐忑，都想争取好职位，拿到好薪水，暗暗地攒着劲四处发力，自觉前途暗淡的人惶惶不可终日。首席编辑部主任赵博风是最兴奋的人，他觉得自己不比谁差，最大的资本是他年轻。最倒霉的是资深编辑部副主任李村，偏偏“屋漏偏遇连阴雨，破船又遭顶头风”。他年轻漂亮的第三任妻子火上浇油似的向他提出了离婚，让他更是晕头转向。其他的年轻编辑，赛赛、张非常、唐瑭等人更是各盯其位，使出浑身解数。竞争上岗结束后，编辑部表面上恢复了平静，但私底里仍然是暗波起伏，有人牢骚有人嘲笑，人际关系重新交织、定位。因为岗位实行新的聘任制，事关利益，大家都努力表现自己，希望在下一次竞岗时自己能再进一步。

Created and written by Roy Clarke, it aired on BBC1 from 1990 to 1995 — spanning five seasons and 44 episodes — four of which are Christmas specials. 　　In 2004 the show came 12th in the Britain's Best Sitcom poll that aired on BBC 2. It is regularly repeated on BBC 1 and on G.O.L.D. All five seasons — including Christmas specials — are available on DVD.
