本片的背景是江户时代的贫民窟，那里住著最贫困的小人物，有妓女、小偷、轿夫、唱戏的……不过黑泽明没有把影片处理成一部低沉的悲剧，相反却以滑稽的喜剧手法表现这群小人物的悲惨生活，而达到更深刻有力的效果。
