木川は上の娘を嫁がせたばかりで、その複雑な心境を飲み友だちの安藤に話した。娘の由利子と二人きりの安藤はいたたまれない気持ちになった。由利子は数年前に恋人の緒方がロンドンに出張する時、三年も待てないと別れたのだが、緒方が英国女性と結婚して帰国して以来、結婚はしないと言っていたのだ。木川には女子大生亜矢子がいた。彼女はある日、無理に由利子に頼んで、緒方の会社でアルバイトをした。九州へ旅行する費用稼ぎだったが、そこで緒方の部下の小林と知りあい、強引に求愛された。亜矢子はそれを拒み、やがて九州に発ったが、そこで彼女を待っていたのは小林だった。最初は、小林のしつこさに嫌がった亜矢子も、小林の真剣な求変を受け入れる気持ちになっていった。二人は一緒に九州を回り、やがて東京に戻った。しかし、木川は亜矢子と小林の結婚話に大反対だった。プレイボーイの噂のある小林に亜矢子をやりたくなかったのだ。しかし、妻の菊は小林の持つ現代的な若者のセンスを買って賛成した。木川は孤立した形になり、心中を安藤に打ち明けて相談した。安藤はレストランの二階に小林を呼び、亜矢子に対する小林の愛情の深さを知った。その時、安藤は緒方と一緒に車に乗る由利子の姿を目にとめた。その夜、痛飲して帰宅した安藤は由利子を詰問し、彼女が、緒方がロンドンへ発つ時すでに身体を許していたことや、誰にも迷惑をかけず、緒方と時々会いながら年をとっていきたい、という娘の気持ちも知った。由利子は何もかも忘れて結婚したい、と思うこともあったが、父を残して嫁ぐ気にはなれなかったのだ。安藤はそんな由利子を不憫に思い、妻子ある緒方との不倫を責めることは出来なかった。それから数日して、亜矢子と小林の結婚式が行なわれた。亜矢子は娘を嫁がせる父親の気持ちも知らず、幸福そうだった。その帰途、由利子は安藤に緒方と別れると告げた。安藤は無言で頷きながら、由利子がこれからどのように生きていくかじっと見守ろうと思うのだった。そんな二人を、タ陽が朱く染めていた。
