In the near future, the existence of "Adepts," people who possess extraordinary abilities known as "Septimal Powers," has caused widespread chaos around the world. In the nation of Japan, order and peace is maintained by a large conglomerate known as the Sumeragi Group. One group known as QUILL (Quorum for Unrestricted Information, Law, and Liberty) pledged to revolt against the Sumeragi Group.

Volker Schlöndorff transposes Bertolt Brecht’s late-expressionist work to latter-day 1969. Poet and anarchist Baal lives in an attic and reads his poems to cab drivers. At first feted and later rejected by bourgeois society, Baal roams through forests and along motorways, greedy for schnapps, cigarettes, women and men: ‘You have to let out the beast, let him out into the sunlight.’ After impregnating a young actress he soon comes to regard her as a millstone round his neck. He stabs a friend to death and dies alone. ‘You are useless, mangy and wild, you beast, you crawl through the lowest boughs of the tree.’ 　　The film takes youthful impetuousness and hatred of oppression as its subject and also ponders the cult of genius and sexual morals. Rainer Werner Fassbinder simultaneously plays both Baal and himself and is surrounded by many actors who were later to perform in his own films. After the film was broadcast on West German television, Brecht’s widow Helene Weigel prohibited any further screenings, arguing that the social circumstances engendering Baal’s rebelliousness had not been adequately explained.

The film tells the story of the Jews of Bardejov in Slovakia, who were almost completely wiped out during the Holocaust. 　　Among them was Holocaust survivor Emil A. Fish, who was 9 years old when a Gestapo officer found him and his family hiding and sent them to a concentration camp to suffer the same fate as their many friends and relatives. Fish survived but to this day no Jews live in Bardejov.

Chuck and his pal Fearless flee a South African carnival when their sideshow causes a fire. After several similar escapades, they've finally saved enough to return to the USA, when Chuck spends it all on a "lost" diamond mine. But that's only the beginning; before long, a pair of attractive con-women have tricked our heroes into financing a comic safari, featuring numerous burlesque jungle adventures...
