Discovery – The Science of Star Wars ，星战中的科学. 　　《星战》讲述科技与我们现实生活的科技发展，由 C3PO 和 R2D2 主持，内容包括机械人的发展，太空漫游和武器发展等等。 　　星战属於 Space Opera 类科幻，著重的是戏剧效果，所以在星战外壳之下，我们看到的还是共和国、议会、帝国、武士等等古典元素，但相对来说，机械人、穿梭机、雷射炮这些科幻完素，则只是背景和特技。 　　通常而言，科幻会有两大分类：硬科幻 (Hardcore SF) 和软科幻 (Softcore SF) 。硬科幻，讲求的是科学的準确性，在故事中提起会飞的车，便会真的从现在的科学来考证一下这些会飞车的可能性，就算是不可能，也会在故事中创作出的另一种延伸现实的科学理论来支持。所以硬科幻的背景细节通常都可堪细味，与我们现在生活中的科学有微妙的关联。亦因为如此，写硬科幻是相当困难的，因为作者需要做大量的资料搜集和考证，去创造故事的科幻背景。 　　相对来说，软科幻就比较对於科学求证就比较宽鬆，甚至没有，主要以内容故事为主。例如最常见的「时间旅行」穚段，很多时都会被略去要达成时间旅行的可能性，如在《多啦 A 梦》裏打开抽屉裏面就有时光机了，没有原理解释。因此，软科幻比较易写，只要构想好背景世界和其科技发展，便即可开工写故事了。 　　事实上，故事太硬科幻的话，整个故事会太艰涩难明；太软的话又会空中楼阁，与现实脱轨。事实上，我自己觉得很多好看的科幻，都其实是「软硬适中」，在一定的科学理论支持下，建造起一个个未来世界，探究在新科技下人们将会变成什么样子，讲裏面的人和事。既然是「科幻」二字，当然是有科也有幻才好看，两者比重平衡。 　　科幻作品一向对於人类未来作出不同的猜想，所以是预言家。不过，也有很多科学发展，其实是取灵感自科幻作品，所以我们会看到根据 R2D2 外形而创做的机械人，看到以两脚行走的机械人。科学家与科幻作家，有著微妙的互动关係，某程度上就像是自我实现的预言。虽然《星战》裏的科学，实际上没有太大的考究，比较「软」，而且也不是新颖构思，但他使人沉醉於伟大的太空场景，让人想实现裏面各种科技，影响著某些发展的方向。

Fry also tells the story of the engineers of the data age, people most of us have never heard of despite the fact they brought about a technological and philosophical revolution. 　　For Hannah Fry, the joy of data is all about spotting patterns. She's Lecturer in the Mathematics of Cities at UCL as well as being the presenter of the BBC series Trainspotting Live and City in the Sky, and she sees data as the essential bridge between two universes - the tangible, noisy, messy world that we see and experience, and the clean, ordered, elegant world of maths, where everything can be captured beautifully with equations. 　　Along the way the film reveals the connection between Scrabble scores and online movie streaming, explains why a herd of Wiltshire dairy cows are wearing pedometers, and uncovers the remarkable network map of Wikipedia. What's the mystery link between 'marmalade' and 'One Direction'? 　　The Joy of Data also hails the giant contribution of Claude Shannon, the American mathematician and electrical engineer who, in an attempt to solve the problem of noisy telephone lines, devised a way to digitise all information. It was Shannon, father of the 'bit', who singlehandedly launched the 'information age'. Meanwhile, the green lawns of Britain's National Physical Laboratory host a race between its young apprentices in order to demonstrate how and why data moves quickly and successfully around modern data networks. It's all thanks to the brilliant technique first invented there in the 1960s by Welshman Donald Davies - packet switching - without which there would be no internet as we know it. 　　But what of the future, big data and artificial intelligence? Should we be worried by the pace of change, and what our own data could and should be used for? Ultimately, Fry concludes, data has empowered all of us. We must have machines at our side if we're to find patterns in the modern-day data deluge. But, Fry believes, regardless of AI and machine learning, it will always take us to find the meaning in them.
